Despite being a comic book fan, I was hesitant to purchase this game simply based on the price. Fortunately, someone gave me an iTunes gift card and I felt as if I could purchase it without blowing my own money.
This game, quite simply, is the next generation of gaming on the iPod touch and iPhone. The graphics and animation are as sophisticated as the storyline the app tries to convey. Taking place in the Ultimate Marvel universe, the Triskelion is on fire in the distance of New York and a myriad of super-villains are running loose with only Spider-Man to stop them.
I think of this game as a simplified and more child-friendly version of Batman: Arkham Asylum. The player has to go through a variety of tasks in order to accomplish a final goal (presumably to see who is behind the fire at the Triskelion and stop him/her/it). Due to the variety of tasks the player has to perform (fighting, dodging, climbing), the game can seem complicated to learn. It’s also a shame that there is no multi-player version of the game as I have not seen that sort of functionality on this type of iPhone game yet.
Also, if this is the Ultimate Marvel Universe, then Spider-Man seems a little too bulky for his role. The comic book Ultimate Spider-Man is a skinny kid.
However the creators got more right than wrong with this game. If you’re willing to spend the seven bucks (or wait for the inevitable sale) then you’ll likely find it to be worth it.
