User Rating:I recognize that I’m a little late to the whole "Rock Band" phenomenon, but recently Tap Tap Revenge offered the app as a free download rather than $.99. I suspect the release of Rock Band for the iPhone had something to do with this decision. Plus, they can make more money by having people download premium tracks to their device (a bit like how most gaming systems make their money back from the software).
With that, I finally downloaded and played a version of Tap Tap Revenge. For those unaware, the premise is simple. With a song playing in the background (the game usually provides one or two for free and any additional songs at a cost), the player has to tap lights as they travel along a line. The lights are usually to the beat of the song and as a result game-play can be addictive. In effect, it’s a small-scale version of Rock Band.
The primary problem I have with the game, ironically, also involves how they make money. Why can’t one use his or her own audio library to play the game? My guess is some sort of extra file is involved to make the lights move with the song, but it would still be a nice feature, particularly if your favorite artist is one not sold by Tapulous.
Still, it’s difficult to argue with free. For an easy, affordable and addictive game, I recommend Tap Tap Revenge. If you really get addicted, you can give them extra money for more song tracks.
Quick Take
Value:Medium-High.
Would I Buy Again:Probably.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Music enthusiasts, particularly popular music.
What I Like:The game. The (low or free) price.
What I Don't Like:Can't use your own custom songs.
Final Statement:If you like Rock Band but can't afford it, Tap Tap Revenge is a good substitute.
