TaskForce for iPhone Review
App Type: iPhone
Your iPhone can do a lot of things. It is a GPS, a music player, video streamer, game console, ebook, portable computer, and it also can be a phone. Well one thing that seems to be a staple of mobile applications is the todo list. My old dumb phones even had todo lists. When you have a device that can store information, you immediately begin making lists on it. With the power of iPhone, and the popularity of philosophies like “Getting Things Done,” the app store has exploded with so many todo apps that offer a wide range of features for organizing, manipulating, and sharing lists that it can make a persons head spin to figure out which one works best for you. Toopia feels your pain, and also thinks that all those “features” can get in the way of what you use a todo app for; making lists and marking them completed.
Taskforce is built with that in mind, and strips the list making app to its bare bones. The controls in Taskforce couldn’t be simpler. You can create new items in the list (yes there is only one list,) you can swipe right to mark them complete, and you can swipe left to delete items from the list. Taskforce does have an edit button that allows you to quickly delete or move items around in the list, but it is really amazing how simple Toopia has gotten the action of making lists.
Obviously, this sort of app isn’t a solution for every situation. It has no way to share lists, and no due dates to set. People that use todo lists to organize and direct large projects with complicated groups of task and settings might need to look for an app that is built with that in mind. For those that are running errands, or maybe making a shopping list; for those that need some reminders when packing for a trip; or just setting our agenda for the day; Taskforce is focused, fast, and will not get in your way.
Even with Taskforce’s “less is more” approach, I think that it could be improved in a few important ways. Taskforce is no able to switch from portrait to windescreen and I think that letting people use their device in the orientation that they prefer would help support their mission of getting the interface out of the way and letting people use the app. Secondly, in spite of their aversion to features, I think an option to export the list out by email at least would come in handy while not interfering with the day to day use of the app. All in all this is a high quality app that performs very well. I agree that often the best tool is one that does one thing very well, and Taskforce does this one thing very well, and for $1.19 is well worth giving it a try.
We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
