Much of our love for our iPhones stems from the simple games that provide us with hours of arbitrary enjoyment. But what if suddenly these games weren’t so arbitrary, and there were in fact big prizes to be won by playing them? Suddenly the stakes are much higher when you’re playing a seemingly simple little iPhone game, and this makes the experience a whole lot more intense.
The Great Contest is one of the few apps on your iPhone that rewards you with more than a position on some leaderboards and ‘achievements’ for playing games. Each week, there are several prizes to be won – ranging from £30, to £200 in cash, to video game consoles and HD TVs – by playing simple mini-games.
The games include guide a white ball around a screen to avoid some black balls, and a classic ‘Cave Helicopter’ game, in which you fly a little chopper through a shrinking cave (the developer promises to add more games in future releases). You only get five chances though, so making each go count is essential if you’re to have any hope of winning. You get entered into the prize draw based on your ranking, so the higher you rank, the more chance you have of winning. This effectively means that you don’t have to come 1st to be in with a chance of winning the prize. Losers rejoice!
To play The Great Contest, you need to set up an account and a monthly subscription, which can be paid for either via Paypal or by downloading and installing certain games from the App Store, which give you TGC credits to spend. Considering many of these apps are free, this really is an irresistible offer.
The Great Contest is a great idea that adds a whole new level to iPhone gaming. Suddenly you’re not casually playing ‘Chopper’ with one hand on the bus, but are silently hunched over it in your bedroom knowing that a good session could potentially bag you a 3D TV. The subscriptions costs are miniscule considering the massive prizes on offer, and the setup of the draw means that you’re always in with a chance of winning. iPhone gaming has never been so gripping.

Who Is It For:People who think a 3D TV is a better reward for playing a game than an 'Achievement'.
What I Like:The Prize Draw system means that everyone's in with at least some chance of winning.
What I Don't Like:Wasting all my lives for the week and having to wait for the next bunch of prizes.

3%: 45 entries
4%: 30 entries
5%: 20 entries
6 - 10%: 15 entries
11 - 20%: 10 entries
21 - 30%: 6 entries
31 - 40%: 3 entries
41 - 50%: 1 entry
