I was always under the impression that being a hair stylist was extremely easy. I mean, what could be so difficult about snipping at a few strands of hair? Toca Hair Salon 2 proved me wrong. A fantasy hair salon simulator, it got me on my toes fiddling with the huge array of hairstyling tools available at my fingertips, and even then it took me a while to understand how they worked.
The game categorizes itself under Education, presumably to educate users about the workings of an actual hair salon. However, I personally found that it resembled more of a fantasy game instead.
In Toca Hair Salon 2, players run a hair salon and game play revolves around coming up with new hairstyles for patronizing customers. These come in the form of ridiculously looking patrons where players can fiddle with their hair to come up with equally ridiculous looks. Use curling rods to make twists in their hair before using a straightening iron to tune it up in weird angles. Ultimately, it’s up to your creativity to how you want them to look. Of course, half the styles players will end up messing around with will definitely attract weird stares if done in real life, which lives up to the fantasy genre.
A sandbox-styled game play system ensures that players can do pretty much whatever they want with free reign over their designs rather than having to meet dull targets to advance.
Also, another inconsistency from real life would be how if a mistake was made it can be undone by making the customers’ hair grow back instantaneously with a magical potion. But given that the game never claimed to parallel real life and instead prided itself as a fantasy genre through exaggerated outlooks, that can only serve as a blessing when seen as a second chance for players to correct their mistakes.
However, priced at $2.99 I did find Toca Hair Salon 2 a little too pricey for what it is worth. Although a great app nonetheless, it is not worth the cost.
