It seems a good time to be a kid in school in these times, especially with educational book apps like the Ultimate Dinopedia from National Geographic. Appstore has the app categorized under books, but it’s more than a tradional book as it has several multimedia aspects which seem almost natural and beautiful on the iPad.

By showing (large) images of several dinosaurs, the user is taken by the hand through pre-historic times through the evolution of these fantastic beings. Every image has a fact sheet, description (text + voice), fun fact and the info about the image that’s shown. This is the backbone of the app, but by no means all there is to it.

There is a family tree where you can see the evolution of all dino’s or only the plant of meat eaters seperately. The family tree can be explored by clicking on a dinosaur and reading info about it; everywhere there is plenty to read.

Via the contents menu, all the many pages can be explored like a book with colorful imaginery and a lot of information, like the timelines, the extinction moment and a lot more. Very educational and although this app was created for kids, it is informational for adults as well, not to mention great fun to read through.

Last but not least, there is the video menu with 14 videos, mostly computer animated, of dinosaurs as scientists think they lived and behaved in their habitats.

Let’s hope publishers see this medium as a growing effort and that updates offer more videos and information still.

We rate this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
