User Rating:Ready to take on 13 million other players? Welcome to Clint City! Boostr has released its 1.3.2 version for iPhone and iPod touch, addressing some of the issues of the previous version. Urban Rivals is an online, strategic, multi player, trading card game that has been running since 2006. Now you can battle it out between iPhone and computer, 24/7.
Once you’ve downloaded the free app you get eight free character cards. Each card is a person, like a ninja, or a kick ass chick, and each has a special power or a damage value. Each character also belongs to a clan. A fight between two players begins by four of their cards (or characters) being picked at random. You team up your characters to your opponents characters and they fight, boosted by Urban Rivals special ingredient: Pillz. Pillz are basically pills that give you extra strength (amphetamines, if you like). You can only use 12 pillz in each fight, and it’s a secret how many you are using until the fight begins. And that is what makes Urban Rivals really interesting: its poker style play. You can bluff your way out and the best bluffer wins, which isn’t the same as the one who holds the best cards! You can also trade cards online, which is very un-poker like, but useful if you’re looking for that special card to boost your powers and get you to be Master of the city. After each fight you get experience points (XP).
The more experience and the more battles, the higher your level and the stronger your characters become. On higher evels you can fight tournaments and start your own clan. Basically, the more you invest, the more fun the gameplay becomes. Which I totally get from the developer’s perspective (more is more), but it can get very, very expensive though. If you’re paying for this yourself and you’ve got the cash to do it: knock yourself out! If your kids are playing this: you may want to switch off the in game purchasing option, because it all adds up pretty quickly (remember The Smurfs!).
We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
