It seems that nowadays, game companies are always thinking of creative ways to make games out of the most mundane tasks and jobs possible. Flight Control made directing airplanes seem like fun, Cooking Mama inspired thousands to pursue cooking, Plants vs. Zombies adds excitement to gardening, and now W.E.L.D.E.R. is making welding seem like a blast.
Word Examination Laboratory for Dynamic Extraction and Reassessment, or W.E.L.D.E.R., or short, is a fun new casual word puzzle game about welding letters together. At the beginning of each game, you are presented with a 8×8 grid, comprised of several different types of tiles. These tiles may either contain a letter or be blank; blank tiles may be stamped with a letter of your choice.
The goal of the game is simple: form as many words as possible by switching any adjacent tiles with each other. There are also many special swaps you can earn and perform. These include non-adjacent swaps, group swaps, and, my personal favorite, the apocalypse swap, which wipes out the entire board and replaces it with a brand new set of tiles. You will score points based on how long the words formed are and what type of tiles are used (different types of metal are worth different amounts of points). Additionally, if you are lucky, a cascade may be formed, causing several words to be formed, and earning huge amounts of points for you. W.E.L.D.E.R. is extremely easy to learn, but almost impossible to master. You’ll definitely experience that “just one more try” feeling when you play this game.
The game is actually split into two modes. The main game offers 15 addicting, increasingly-difficult levels of word-welding madness. This may sound like very little, but the levels extremely hard at a surprisingly fast rate, and I have yet to beat even level 7. The second mode is comprised of many different mini-game variations of the main game, including a sandbox mode, which can be great for kids.
Despite simple gameplay, W.E.L.D.E.R features amazingly detailed and smooth graphics, and the score board will be eye-candy for any steampunk fan. It runs extremely well on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 (and I see no reason why it should lag on older devices), and it has yet to crash even once for me. Plus, the app is universal, which is always a good bargain for users who own multiple devices.
W.E.L.D.E.R. is a great, original word game that will provide as a great new addition to any casual gamer’s collection. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
