Zombie Gunner is a side scrolling shooter which pits you against hordes are zombies. Before you roll your eyes at yet another zombie game for the iPhone, this arena shootout bare more than a passing resemblance to the side scrolling classic Metal Slug. Did the developers at Gamevil make a winner, or will this game leave you wanting to turn your gun from the zombies to yourself?

Zombie Gunner is your typical side scrolling survival shooter. You start with a pistol and a melee attack, both of which are unlimited ammo. Each mission or wave consists of a goal that you must reach before the end of the timer. Some missions are simply kill a number of zombies. Others have you protecting citizens, or killing a particular zombie that will try and evade you. There is even an Indiana Jones-like boulder chase level. There are one hundred and twenty missions and while the mission types don’t change much, the difficulty does.

The game starts out with your basic squishy zombie that is easily dispatched with a quick punch or shot. As the level progress, you will find yourself facing a myriad of zombies, some of which require special weapons in order to kill them quickly. The shop, which pops up between each level, provides you will six other weapons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. One thing they all share is that they take ammo to use. There is a limited amount and you can refill with magazines collected in the levels, or purchased from the store. The coins you use to purchase items are collected from the levels and as bonuses when levels are completed.

In addition to weapons, you also have the ability to summon large tanks, or other machines to aid you in you zombie slaughter. With item buttons, zombie juice splatters, and the controls, the iPhone screen is quite full and will become so cluttered that it makes it hard to tell if there are incoming zombies (or those little fly zombies that I can’t stand). Luckily the controls are simple enough. The left side is a two way controller for moving left and right, on the right side is a virtual analog stick for directing your shots. The controls works well most of the time, but during the heat of battle I found my figure wandered a bit from the firing control and this would cause me to stop shooting, sometimes with disastrous effect.

Zombie Gunner is a free app that is supported with ads as well as the optional IAP purchase of coins and bonus to some items. I didn’t feel a need to purchase coins in order to enjoy the game, but the ads did get in the way when you are tapping on the interface. Zombie Gunner isn’t breaking any new ground, the theme of zombies has been beaten to undeath. Some the missions were original and I liked the inclusion of bosses. The art style is fun and I definite got the chaotic feel of the Metal Slug series when playing this game. I would recommend giving this game a shot if you like crazy shooters and crazy zombies.
